The Interior Design and Event/Floral Design Parallel

The parallel between event/floral design and interior design is so strong and absolutely undeniable. You can't flip through any interior design or architectural magazine without seeing some floral element, whether it is used to compliment the overall design or what has inspired the design. You also can't attend an event or wedding that isn't somehow themed around a key period in design history.

Hello! I'm Erin, Jenn's assistant :)

I have been with Modern Day Floral since May of 2008, though sometimes I feel like it has been years :) I'm fortunate enough to work with some of the most incredible and talented men and women in the industry along with the best clients anyone could ask for :) Thanks to everyone for helping me LOVE my job!!!

(yes - that is me in the background making sure the tiniest detail was 100% perfect...)

This past May, I graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design right here in downtown Grand Rapids with a BFA in Interior Design. Since there are SO many parallels between interior design and event/floral design, I find myself using my education on a daily basis. Once in awhile, I get to dabble in AutoCad or draw perspectives for presentations and clients!

Just some randomness about me...

- I am engaged (as of September) to my best friend, Joe :) We will be getting married next August and can't wait to start our lives together!

- I am completely obsessed with Thursday night television :) It is such a great way to kick off Friday!

- If I could live off crab rangoon, chocolate chip bagels and popcorn I totally would :)

- My favorite vacation spot is Maui with Rome closely following...

- I am IN LOVE with the Twilight series... more about Team Edward, but can't help feeling some love for Jacob...

Art Prize: Room 1

As mentioned in my earlier post, the closing gala was one of the most incredible events we have had the honor to design. Jodi Bos of In Any Event along with the team from Special Events Rental did an amazing job transforming a not so glamorous site into something spectacular. Also, thanks to Jen Kroll,we have these gorgeous pictures to share with all of you!

The venue was split into three very distinct sections and styles: organic/botanical, modern and swanky couture. In an effort to share all the lovely details (and prevent a mile long post!), I decided to split this event into three blog posts.

First up - Organic/Botanical!!!

Focal Design

This 8ft. ginormous botanical design greeted guests as they entered the party. Affectionately known as the "little shop of horrors," this design featured an unusual blend of pin cushion protea, green goddess calla lilies, orange banksia, wildcat oncidium orchids, succulence and a mixture of tropical foliage.

Cocktail Table Design

Orchids come in many different varieties and one particular species that thrills me every time is the lady slipper. This little beauty takes center stage with it's beautiful lines and unique characteristics...amazing right?!

Bar Design

The bar design was a culmination of all of the floral elements used in the room. I loved how the flowers accentuated the colors of the room.

Next up room #2 - Modern! I can't wait to share with all of you...it's one of my favorites! Until then have a wonderful day!!!

Wedding Recap: Lorri and Alex

A few weeks ago, we introduced you to Lorri and Alex, our fabulous couple from Colorado! On Halloween, these two celebrated their love with family and friends at the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

The fabulous Amy Carroll shared some great shots of Lorri and Alex, the wedding party and of course the flowers! We hope you enjoy what you see because we had an amazing time working with these clients!

Lorri loved texture and color, by using bright pin cushions, we were able to add A LOT of zest to this bouquet!

His socks matched her bouquet!!!!!

It was super chilly on Halloween... this shot of the Uggs - priceless :) I even heard the boots made a debut on the dance floor!!! I love it!

I get chills just looking at these bouquet shots...

Unique chair treatments are so in right now! Lorri was ALL about the details - and we LOVED it! She requested that everyone at the head table get something special on their chairs :) It really added so much to the overall look!

Congratulations Lorri and Alex and thank you SO much for allowing us to be apart of such a special day in both of your lives! It was truly a pleasure working with you... and if you need anything for your baby shower ;) ;) we hope to help!!!

Art Prize Opening Ceremony

In Western Michigan, we are fortunate enough to live in a city that is rich in art and culture. We are also blessed to have many families who give back through their philanthropist efforts. Back in April, Rick DeVos announced that in the Fall of 2009, Grand Rapids would be home to the largest art prize competition. His ArtPrize would be awarding $250,000 to the first prize winner! Anyone and everyone was encouraged to enter and the end result was spectacular.

On September 23rd, the two week festivities kicked off with the help of the extraordinary Jodi Bos of In Any Event. We were asked to design a fresh, clean look to bring the colors of slate and saffron colors to life; craspedia, pin cushion protea and locally grown celosia were used as our primary design elements.

The crinkled taffeta linens coupled with the ghost chairs looked spectacular.

Great work Jod!

I absolutely love these crisp white containers! They're perfect for super mod jumping designs!!

This little eclectic beauty was designed by Rueben whose unique style added the perfect flair to the registration tables. And how much do you love this container?!

The VIP opening reception was one of many events we were fortunate enough to design during the ArtPrize festivities. I look forward to sharing more!

I would also like to send a special thank you to the DeVos family for continuing to give back to our community and for making Grand Rapids such an amazing place to live! I'm so proud to be a Grand Rapidian!

Wedding Hairpieces!

Back during the bridal show back in October at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, we were able to design a few couture hairpieces for a few of the Design1 models. One of our designers, Emily, came up with this excellent idea of making hairpieces for brides and women who want to spice up their look. As we encourage her to get on Etsy and sell her unique and creative talent... we had Rueben practice Emily's look just in case she has to go into mass production ;) Enjoy!!

Employee Spotlight: Lauren

Hi, I'm Lauren! I've been working at Modern Day since...March? Boy time flies by fast! That's probably because I have so much fun here. Everyday is something new for me, I do everything from writing publications to setting up events to selling flowers. There isn't a part of this job that I don't enjoy and that's probably because everything that MDF does turns out absolutely stunning. Jenn, Erin and the designers amaze me every time!

Okay more about me, hmmm, well I'm originally from the U.P. and no I don't have a Yooper accent (I hide it well). I moved to Grand Rapids to attend GVSU where I received a Bachelor of Science in Advertising and Public Relations. When I'm not at Modern Day working on weddings, I'm at home planning MY OWN WEDDING! Eeeee :) Check out our blog!

My wonderful fiance, Brent, and I rescued a fabulous little beagle, named Quincy, from the Humane Society. She is 20 lbs of pure energy! When I'm not working on our wedding plans or walking Quincy, I'm figure skating. I've been skating since I was 4 and I still coach beginning skaters and give private lessons at Kentwood Ice Arena.

New Moon Premiere Party!!!

We all know that one of the "hottest" things in 2009 was the Twilight Series. It is all over the bookstores, Volvo commercials and internet. Next week, the long awaited "New Moon" film is making its debut!! We will be participating in the premiere party at Celebration! North in Grand Rapids.

The party will be filled with fabulous giveaways from local vendors, free appetizers and regular popcorn along with a cash bar. We hope to see you there!!!!

Wedding Recap: Joe and Amber

Back in July we had the pleasure of designing for Joe and Amber's wedding! Held at the super modern EVE Lounge on the 4th floor of the B.O.B, we knew we were going to be able to design something "big city" - and it was incredible!

Head Table with simple accents of green cymbidium orchids... it adds so much and makes this table just a little bit more special!

To create a backdrop behind the head table, we created this simple, yet dynamic display of wheat grass, candlelight and screens from Ikea!

How To Pin On A Boutonnière

Our "How to Hold a Bouquet" post last week provided a lot of great feedback from our readers so we thought it was necessary to publish a post for the men. We don't want to leave the guys hanging!

The last thing we would want is to see the day of a wedding, would be our fabulous groom and groomsmen walking down the aisle with a bout that's about to fall off so below are a few easy steps to pinning on a secure boutonnière.

Pinning a boutonnière isn't that complicated but knowing how to hide the pin without stabbing your guy is the real trick.

Step 1. Hold the stem of the boutonnière, the front facing you, on the left lapel. The boutonnière should sit about 4 inches below the top of the guys shoulder. Tilt the bout on a slight angle and take a step back and look where you'll be placing it. We don't want you putting a million holes in the guys tux because the placement isn't correct.

Step 2. Start the pinning by piercing the fabric from under the lapel on the left side (guys left) of the stem of the boutonnière.

Step 3. Move the pin over the top of the stem and pierce the opposite side of the lapel. Pull tightly to secure the boutonnière. Ideally, the only part of the pin that should be showing would be a thin line on top of the stem and even then, the pin should be placed in a location where a petal or leaf could hide this.

Step 4. If the boutonnière is extra heavy two pins can be used to secure the weight. If you are worried about the boutonnière moving or a bit of metal showing, you can pierce the floral tape on back of the boutonnière instead of having the pin go over top of the bout.

Going to the Chapel: Lorri and Alex

Our fabulous cross-country couple, Lorri and Alex, are celebrating their marriage here in Grand Rapids! We are so excited for what she has in store for her guests :) Lorri has incredible taste and style!!

Lorri was a merchandise manager at Macy's but has since switched careers to become on to a full time "wedding planner."
Alex is the manager of Communications/Media for USA Hockey in Colorado Springs.

Tell us about the first time you two met!

"We officially met online through EHarmony! Sounds cheesy… but we truly were a perfect match. Our first face to face encounter was at Bar Louie for drinks and fabulous conversation on April Fool’s Day 2008."

What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"One of our favorite things to do is experiment with new foods and recipes in the kitchen. Afterwards we usually end up enjoying a beautifully cooked meal together. Don’t they always say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?"

What is the one thing about your wedding you're the most excited for?

"We are so excited to bring our closest family and friends together in one spot to celebrate this special and memorable event. It will be a party we remember for a lifetime."

Tell us about your proposal story!

"Alex completely surprised me with a December 26th proposal. We came home on Christmas day and there were 3 surprise gifts on our fireplace mantle from "Santa". I was instructed not to open these gifts until midnight. The 26th was our dating anniversary so I thought it was a cute little anniversary present. However, after opening a bottle of champagne, champagne flutes and a card, Alex said a few sweet things to his wide eyed girlfriend, pulled the engagement ring off a one of the branches of our Christmas tree and got down on bended knee. I of course said yes and this will truly be an everlasting love. Thanks EHarmony!"

How to Hold a Bouquet

Your bouquet is something you have hand selected to reflect you and your wedding style. You've spent hours upon hours choosing the perfect shade of flowers for your bouquet and when it comes time for you to walk down the aisle, you want to make sure you are not only comfortable holding your bouquet but both your dress and bouquet are photographed perfect.

Here are a few tips on how to hold a bouquet:

1. Bend your arms 90 degrees. Let the weight of your bouquet bring your arms down just a touch further. The bouquet should rest about belly button level and your forearms should be resting on your hip bones. Your arms should feel comfortable, we don't want them turning into jello mid ceremony!

2. Show the front of the bouquet. If your bouquet has a brooch, bow or decorative piece make sure it's facing forward. If your bouquet is only flowers search for flower that stands out. If you are having trouble finding the front, ask your florist!

3. Grasp the bouquet gracefully. Don't hold the stems to tight and don't interlock your fingers. Save that for the hand holding!

4. Finally, it's okay to sass up your bouquet shots after the ceremony. Maybe hold the bouquet with one hand to your side or better yet, have your new husband hold it for you!

Designer Spotlight: Karen

It is about time to introduce another fabulous member of the Modern Day Floral design team!! Karen has been working with us for two years now and brings a calm, creative flavor to the table. I knew when I met Karen that she would bring great ideas and crafty tips... someone we definitely needed in our growth. Without further ado...

Hi. I'm Karen. I have been working with Modern Day Floral for two years now and have been designing flowers since high school. Since I don't want to date myself, we'll just leave it at that!! In the past several years, I've made more bouquets, corsages, gift baskets, ect than I could ever begin to describe. And I loved every second of it!

In my spare time I like to sew, bake, make salsa and beautify my house! Everyone teases me about being a "Martha Stewart." Over the last few months, I've been going through the process of adopting a baby. Being a mom has been something I've wanted for a very long time and I'm hoping everything works out! It will be quite a full house though :) We have a dog, four cats, a step child, a nephew who lives with us part time, frogs and a snake (boys will be boys!). Can't wait to have a new addition of our household!!

My favorite part of floral design is making the bouquets. Mostly because they are one of the most important and remembered parts of a wedding... I always feel a level of joy and satisfaction when I get to pass off the bridal bouquet. I really love what we do! Not to mention to fabulous product we get to work with!

Going to the Chapel: Noddea and Calin

Noddea and Calin are getting married October 17! This couple is fun, outgoing and both have a love for the theater.

Noddea: Program and Building Coordinator for Campus Life at Aquinas College

Calin: Freelance commercial/industrial/stage actor and writer.

Tell us about the very first time you two met?

"That's tricky! As actors we both saw each other from the audience perspective in different theatre productions in the Grand Rapids community in late 2004/ early 2005, but we didn't get a face-to-face introduction until the Spring of 2007 when mutual theatre friends' band was playing and we both were there. Later in the summer, we continued to show up at the same places following rehearsals for separate theatre productions and the rest is is history! In December 2008, we finally got to be on stage together for the very first time!"

What is your idea of the perfect date?

"We are big movie-goers...in a big way! The idea of a perfect date is probably hitting Celebration! Cinema on a Saturday or Sunday morning, with a refillable popcorn bucket in hand, followed by an afternoon at home, grilling on the deck. "

The one thing about your wedding that you are most excited for?

"The ring blessing ritual...everyone in attendance that day will have opportunity to hold and personally bless our rings during the wedding ceremony. Knowing that we have our friends and families support in our marriage and are wishing for our success as a family is an overwhelming emotional gift for us."

Your proposal story:

"One year after our first "official" date, we drove out to Hoffmaster State Park to lay on the beach and read, and just "be". As we were leaving I thought, "I'm in jeans. glasses, and a hoddie...he looks really good." After lying on the beach for a while there was some discussion about life, our future and Calin proposed with a custom-designed by Hoffman Jewelers in East Grand Rapids. The center stone is a stunning natural sapphire that Calin's father had given to his mother in the early 1970's. As the proposal was happening all I remember thinking was, Noddea, remember this! Remember this! Remember what he says, people are going to ask about this moment!-however; that's what I remember most."

Congratulations Noddea and Calin. Noddea, those are some smokin' hot shoes in your engagement picture and what a beautiful and special engagement ring.

What first sparked your interest in creating fruit displays?

"We have always had an interest in food, style and fun... our passion for taking food, making it unique and the fun that we have while doing it was the perfect synergy of the things we enjoy... which sparked our interest in this line of work!"

What is your must-have item on the job?

"Besides the necessary items we need to create our arrangements, we need each other! The balance between our personalities and the creativity that is generated from bouncing ideas back and forth makes it a must-have for us to work together while creating these unique arrangements."

Any great business advice you swear by?

"Always listen to the clients wants... always work hard and honestly.. always be open to criticisms and ideas... but at the end of the day, be true to yourself and love what you do!"

What is the most important personal satisfaction you get with your job?

"Please our clients and seeing the reactions of people as they see our work for the first time and knowing that we got to be a part of making someone's special day even more memorable... that is the most rewarding part of doing what we do!"

If you could work with anyone, who would it be?

"As a mother-daughter team... we are each other's first choice! We have worked together from the very beginning doing family dinners, cooking contests and parties of all sorts! Our work ethics are the same and what one of us doesn't think of, the other one does!"

If you could have anyone as your client, who would it be?

"Since we couldn't come up with any one person we would like to work with, we'll say this: our ideal client would be someone who gave us a vision... something unique... where the sky was the limit... and then gave us full creative interpretation to design it!"

What does your normal day consist of?

"Our normal days consists of caring for our families, chores, chatting with each other and brainstorming new ideas for making our business as unique and creative as possible."

Days off and down time are cherished in this industry. How do you spend yours?

"Doing the things we love! We both love spending time with our families, entertaining with our friends, being outside, movie, the Food Network, scrapbooking, knitting, being involved in church activities... basically anything we can do together!"

Going to Vegas for Engage!09

Well on Sunday I am getting up bright & early early and hoping on a plane to get out of this rainy and cold state! That is right... I'm leaving for a few days!!

Tell us about the first time you two met!

"We met briefly at a church retreat in the beginning of high school but, we didn't really get to know each other until our senior year. We started dating in 2002."

What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"Enjoying a nice bottle of wine on the beach one evening. Maybe there's live music somewhere off in the distance..."

What is the one thing about your wedding you are the most excited for?

"Gathering all of our favorite people in one spot, enjoying company, good food, refreshments and music."

Tell us about your proposal!!

"We were snowshoeing over sleep bear dunes and there's a huge overlook on Lake Michigan where we carved our initials and froze a little together. The was slanted and icy so we had to crawl off, which was hysterical... We were just starting to hike back and Art "fell down" (he says on purpose, I say it was real) and asking if I would spend the rest of my life with him. I screamed and jumped into his arms. I left my glove off the entire way down the path, showing everyone that 'WE'RE ENGAGED!'"

Bridal Show on October 16th

In just a week, Grand Rapids Bride Magazine will be hosting their long awaited bridal show at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. It begins at 5:00 pm and will run until 9:00 pm. For any of you brides looking for the best vendors in the greater Grand Rapids area... this is the place to be. You will find photographers, invitation designers, pastry chefs and SO many more incredible businesses. I can guarantee booths will never have looked so good!

Bouquet Recap: Cairn and and Nick

The lovely Cairn came to us with a very specific vision for her wedding. She wanted the look of a swanky and glamour wedding. Being the a crafty person herself, Cairn designed a lot of her own elements of the wedding, including her own centerpieces and decor.

She came to us looking for the perfect bridal bouquet to fit with her wedding style. I would say we worked very well together!!!

I LOVE how the bouquet and the dress totally play off each other! Absolutely gorgeous... absolutely fantastic! Thank you Cairn for being so incredible to work with! Congratulations on your new marriage AND the new house!

Wedding Recap: Melissa and Marty

It has been one crazy summer and as we find ourselves pulling out our yummy cashmere sweaters and comfy cozies, I can't help but feel blessed for the incredible couples we have had the opportunity to work with this season. Although we love all our clients, there are a few that touch our hearts and become lifelong friends. Melissa Metzger is one such person.

On July 3, 2009 at the San Chez bistro, Melissa and Marty celebrated their union as man and wife. As you already know I have been anxiously awaiting to share the recap of this event and it was definitely worth the wait! Jessica Johnston did an unbelievable job capturing this wedding.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the initial post featuring my assistant Erin's rendering I encourage you to do so...she's amazing!!!

So who doesn't love a bouquet loaded with texture and a touch of sass! The rich raspberry ribbon and stunning brooch gave Melissa's bouquet that extra something special.

Our lovely Miss Melissa holding her bouquet which by the way contains scabiosa pods, mini green hydrangea, green tea roses, mini green cymbidiums, calla lilies, lily grass loops and my personal favorite, the goddess herself, the white phalneaopsis orchid.

I'm so in love with pom balls and this has to be my absolute favorite!

Our one minor challenge with this particular wedding was the ceremony and reception location were same site. We had just a mere 45 minutes to completely flip this room after the ceremony. Here's a peak at the room layout

...and poof just 45 minutes later the reception! This reset came together beautifully and I have to send a high five out to the San Chez staff for all their help. Creative people can be a crazy group to work with and thankfully they smiled and accomidated my every request.

My personal favorite, the sweetheart table. This area was where Melissa and Marty shared their vows just moments earlier. The intimate ceremony setting was created by floating sheer white chiffon fabric draped in white dendrobium and crystal strands. Special Events Rental did another great job draping the fabric.

Karen our in-house seamstress not to mention extraordinary designer made all of the custom runners for this wedding.

Watching event go from concept to completion has to be one of the most rewarding parts of our job as event designers. Each detail, whether great or small makes all the difference in the world. I know I speak for the entire Modern Day staff when I say, "WE LOVE WHAT WE DO!" Thank you Melissa and Marty for being such a pleasure to work with. I can't wait to see you in just two weeks. Vegas here we come baby!

On June 27th, we were fortunate enough to design for Jessica and Bert! Their ceremony was held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and the reception was held at the new facility at Thousand Oaks Golf Club. Everything about their wedding was the epitome of elegant!

Tell us about the very first time you two met!

"Jordan and I met about 7 years ago at Delta College in Saginaw, MI. I thought Jordan was very arrogant and egotistical and Jordan thought I looked like Katie Holmes. It was a complicated relationship from the start. We actually didn’t become friends until a few years later when we re-met at Kendall Collage of Art and Design here in Grand Rapids. We were placed together in a group project and became best friends instantly. The rest is history."

What is your idea of the perfect date?

"Well, we haven't had much time lately, but I think we'd both agree that the perfect date would include a nice dinner following by watching the sun set with a glass of wine on the beach, but we love a good movie in pj's as well."

What is the one thing about your wedding you're the most excited for?

"Being that we're both designers, Jordan and I have put a lot of time into designing all of the details. We wanted to put our personal touch into everything we created so I think we're most excited to see all of our details come together in one day."

Tell about your proposal!

"Our relationship is in some ways summed up in music, in fact Jordan often uses lyrics as a way to express his feelings for me. He popped the question on July 23rd; my birthday. We started the night with dinner reservations here in Grand Rapids. After dinner I thought I was going to get a really long back massage but I had no idea what Jordan had planned. He sat me down on the couch and handed me a card. The card went on to say how happy he was that we had found each other and how much I meant to him. At this point I was still unsuspecting because it was no uncommon for Jordan to write meaningful cards on everyday occasions. However this card was different because there was a guitar pick attached to the left hand side of the card. After reading the card, Jordan took my hand and lead me up the stairs to find our favorite song playing and his guitar mysteriously placed against the wall. Inside were two tickets to a Joshua Radin concert that we had talked about earlier that month. I thought to myself, OK, I already know about these tickets...? At that point I looked at him in confusion and reached for the tickets. As I pulled the tickets off the case, a ring box swung down and opened right in front of me. I was so shocked that I have no recollections of what Jordan said, how he said it, or even how he placed the ring on my finger. The last thing I remember saying was 'did you put this ring on my finger; you have to do it again...'"

We love you guys! Excitement doesn't even begin to describe how we're feeling for Saturday...!!!! Congratulations a little bit early!!!

I knew when I met our bride, the fabulous Allison, we were in for a good time! She loved bold design and was open to anything. Both Allison and Matt's main concern was that their guests had a fantastic time surrounded by great food, unbelievable entertainment and decor that was modern but not cold.

When designing at the JW, selecting just to the right accent color is key to creating a rock solid look. The carpet is bold but fantastic if paired with the perfect color palette, rich raspberry with black accents and punches of citron and aburgene was a perfectly playful pair for this spectacular venue.

Thanks to Karrn and Ken of Lotus Photographic I have amazing pictures to share. I feel so blessed to work with such talented and gracious photographers. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have proof of our hard work. Thanks guys!

The personal flowers were distinctly unique and I couldn't help but fall in love with the pocket squares. Our talented lonely male designer Rueben did such a great job on these! I don't know if you can see them but the bridal bouquet actually contained not just one but four rings to represent the "something borrowed, something blue."

We were all in love with Karen's lovely little wreath designs made out of carnations!

Matt and Allison, the amazing couple! How much do you love her dress? It was made out of laser cut lace and looked absolutely stunning on her.

All of the table numbers, escort cards and menus were created by the talented Jill of Events by Icandy. The pattern was a play on their invitations which helped pull the complete look together.

As a surprise to the lovely couple, I had Jill create a custom lampshade to match the couples wedding pattern. These little lovelies were used on the head table.

"We met in college, he moved into one of my friend's room that was one of his friends. He thought I liked his friend and I thought he like my friend. Later we found out that we were both wrong and liked each other! We've been together since April of 2004."

What is your idea of the perfect date?

"A surprise date is always fun, something unexpected. I love when I get home from work and Josh tells me we're going out then takes me to a nice dinner, a movie, or even the beach. "

The one thing about your wedding that you are most excited for?

"I am most excited for my dress and the look on Josh's face when he sees me walking down the aisle. I have lost 45 lbs so it's a really big deal to me."

Your proposal story:

"Josh proposed that day of this college graduation. We had a party at our house in Big Rapids with our families. His Dad gave a heartfelt toast that made me cry and then; right in front of everyone; Josh got down on one knee. That made me cry even more!"

Congratulations Roxi and Josh. We are so excited for your big day and also can't wait for you to walk down the aisle. You rock sister!

Erin is Engaged!

Our Erin is engaged! Erin's boyfriend, correction fiance, proposed to her on their 3 year anniversary this past weekend. Erin and Joe decided to take a must-needed vacation to the Homestead Resort in Glen Arbor. Erin and Joe left Friday evening and drove like maniacs because Joe insisted they make it for the sunset. They raced into their room at the inn, took a quick look around and headed down to the beach. After the gorgeous Northern Michigan sunset, Joe started talking about their anniversary, the future...never having any doubts... and looking forward to other special dates for the two of them (Erin had a hard time remembering the exact words because "it was happening, it was really happening!"). Then all of a sudden he was on one knee with the most gorgeous ring!

They spent the rest of the weekend, just the two of them, kayaking, hiking and celebrating their engagement. Congratulation Erin! You are wonderfully talented and a joy to work with. We are all looking forward to the wedding details!

Orchard Chic Part II

As promised here are some of my favorite detail shots from the reception and cocktail hour from our Orchard Chic wedding. Jodi of In Any Event did a beautiful job creating a flawless event filled with personal touches.

Although I'm extremely resistant to the idea of fall being right around the corner, I have to admit I find comfort in cider, warm dutch apple pie and spiced donuts. I'm convinced that the only reason we stay in Michigan is for our infamous fall season which is absolutely heavenly!

The cocktail hour was nestled among beautiful flowering bushes, lush plantings and amazing apple trees. Could you possibly ask for a more picturesque setting?

Hand-tied bundles of Maritime roses in julep cups were used to add the perfect touch to the yummy LaTavola linens.

I would have to say that one of Jodi's strong suits is definitely her escort "table" designs. I love how she used an antique door to display here picture perfect escort cards. She is the queen of craft, a real Martha Stewart! :)

Sterling silver candelabras and candle stick holders were used to compliment the eclectic combination of containers filled with lush flowers.

Did I mention the bride was also crafty? The smoky plum napkins were hand-sewn by the lovely bride herself. Deep down I was secretly hoping she would have enough left over fabric for a killer dress. The color was simply scrumptious!!!!

The centerpiece containers were a combination of vintage stoneware and tea stained urns. Lush white hydrangea, dark blue veronica, white hypericum berry, jasmine vine and a combination of cool water, virginia and green sahara roses brought this romantic centerpiece to life.

Lovely chocolate brown chandelier...I'll take 5!

The big joke while designing this event was my constant question of, "are the tables going to be too bare." Thank goodness for Erin, my assistant, she was right! The tables were full, lush and romantic just as I had hoped. Next time Erin, I think you need to bet me Indian dinner or cocktails. I owe you!!

Welcome back everyone and I hope you enjoyed a relaxing holiday weekend. I still can't believe fall is right around the corner....you too?

On August 29th we designed flowers for a beautifully romantic orchard chic wedding for the amazing couple Jason and Jenn. Thanks to Jen Kroll I have so many gorgeous pictures to share so I thought I would break it up a little...first up, personal flowers.

I absolutely love this picture of the couple! Don't they look like they're straight out of the 1930's?

The bridal bouquet was a lush romantic combination of cool water roses, picasso calla lilies, white hypericum berry, soft pink lisianthus and veronica, lavendar and finished with a collar of dusty miller and seeded eucalyptus.

These sweet little bouts were a combination of lavendar, white hypericum and dusty miller which complimented the bouquets perfectly not to mention they smelled fabulous!

Wedding Rituals

So often we work with couples who ask for a unity candle arrangement. The designs range from long and low to tall iron rod stands. But what is the unity candle ritual? The lighting of the unity candle happens during the ceremony. The mothers of the bride and groom each light a candle, the couple then uses the candles to light a separate candle. The flames coming together represents the merging of two families.

Since we live in West Michigan we have seen our share of beach weddings and sometimes the Lake Michigan wind doesn't agree with open flames so a spin off of the unity candle ceremony is a sand ceremony. The combination of sand from each family into a single bowl represents the blending of families and is a beautiful memento for the couple to have throughout their marriage.

Dark, creepy, mysterious? HECK NO! We say modern, deep and totally versatile. Hints of black to the color palette can give your event a totally different vibe. I know it sounds scary to add black to your wedding but try adding black feathers, a clear black charger or better yet, a schwarzwalder calla lily and you'll be singing a different toon.

Love a certain color but want to give it something a little extra? Maybe a splash of black is just the ticket... it is definitely ok to be a little bit of a diva!!

Amanda and Alex were married last May. We had the honor of designing a very bright spring wedding for such a bright and cheerful couple. Amanda's European hand-tied bouquet was a collection of hot pink gerbera daises, mini green hypericum and soft peony. Alex wore a hot pink spray rose with loops of greens. The reception was held at Till Midnight in Holland.

Tell us about the first time you two met!

"I was at my best friends bachelorette party. Per usual, I was being read the riot act about not dating enough and being 30 and maybe it's time to start looking for boys ect, ect, ect. In a moment of sheer frustration, I turned around from the table we were seated at, grabbed the arm of the guy walking past us and exclaimed "fine, maybe I'll marry this guy!" That was Matt. The rest is history. True Story."

What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"That a tough question for me. It really depends on the day. I really do love it when we get dressed up and go for a fabulous dinner somewhere followed by a nightcap at some cozy place. I'm guessing Matt would say the same thing. But a close second (or first), would probably include wake boarding on our boat together. I'll ask him..."

What is the one things about your wedding you are the most excited about?

"For me, its just after the ceremony. I'm hoping we'll get to steal just a minute to take it all in. Matt is my best friend and favorite companion for all adventures. And this is the biggest adventure yet."

Tell us about your proposal story!

"A few weeks after we started dating, I invited Matt over to my house along with my other guy friends to watch UofM/Ohio State game. I am a HUGE Michigan football fan. After the game, we went to the Broadway bar to lick our wounds from a painful loss. We had our first kiss at that dive and it kind of became "our spot." A year later, much to my dismay, my beloved Wolverines suffered another painful loss. Matt surprised me by taking me back to the Broadway. The bar was decorated for Christmas ("decorated" being an understatement). He had pinned my ring on a cheesy dancing snowman that sat on our table before our arrival. I saw it when it was shaking around doing its little dance. Perfect. Understated. Not too obvious. I loved it!"

Clean, simple, fresh, elegant but add a tiny splash of color to a white pallet and BAM it's any one's ball game! White is such a wonderful color to work with. It goes great with any season but with touch of sparkle and shine to a winter wedding it looks like a fairytail come to life.

The soft white feathers with soft white roses and a hint of glam just makes me melt.

"Our perfect date is pretty simple - a good meal, great weather and the chance to spend time together."

"Since our wedding has already happened, we're not getting excited for our reception. Since we're from different parts of the country, and have both lived in different states, this is a chance to have all of our friends and family together in one place. We can't wait!"

"After a conversation about friends planning elaborate proposals, Jayson turned to me in the kitchen and said - "if I wait until I get this perfect, I might not ever get to do it, so I want to know, will you marry me?" The rest, as they say, is history..."

On July 18th of 2009, a good friend of mine married a fantastic man and we were honored to design her flowers for the ceremony and reception! Michelle has a bright and cheery personality and her florals definitely matched her!

One of my favorite shots... look at the color of the bouquet popping off the gray sky!

I absolutely loved her bridal bouquet! The different textures and scrumptious color palette of saffron, raspberry and kiwi is always a perfect combination.

Some inside info for all of you readers... Michelle has coached the Jenison Varsity dance team for years and is absolutely fabulous at what she does. You can totally tell she's a dancer...just look at that pose!!

Going to the Chapel: Jessica and Kyle

Tell us about the first time you two met!

"Kyle and I have actually known each other for most of both our lives. We both attended Immaculate Heart of Mary grade school and then Catholic Central High School. We actually rode the same bus growing up and Kyle remembers I was "two stops" after him. We were friends throughout high school but did not start dating until right after I graduated from college."

What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"Date night for us usually entails going for dinner at a new restaurant that has a nice atmosphere and then maybe catching a movie or heading home to relax and drink wine while watching HGTV! We also love Sunday afternoons of antiquing and discovering new places within our own city."

What is the one thing about your wedding you are the most excited for?

"We are most excited about being married and moving in together. As for the wedding day itself, we just can't wait to see how everything will come together - our amazing flowers, the venue, the food and drinks and plenty of dancing to our band!"

Tell us about your proposal story!

"Kyle proposed on Saturday, December 13, 2008. The weekend before, we went to pick out and cut down a Christmas tree. We had it mostly decorated, but Kyle was waiting to get some of his ornaments from his childhood that were at his parents home. On Saturday afternoon, he called me over after being busy "hanging lights all day at his parents." I went over and Kyle showed me the ornaments he brought back from his parents home. He suggested we hang them on the tree, so we did. I was not suspecting a thing, until he directed me to the other side of the tree to a specific, beautiful ornament. The ornament was a picture frame and inside the frame he had written, "Will you marry me?" and was getting down on one knee when I started to turn around after reading it. It was an amazing night and we proceeded to head over to our parents houses to celebrate with all our family and to make lots of phone calls!"

Ok, so if you are reading this you probably already fully grasp the awesomeness that is Modern Day Floral but I need to rave about them anyway because they are so worth it.

I first heard about Modern Day Floral through a friend who is dear friends with Jenn, who had just opened a new flower shop. No longer than 2 days after initially hearing about Modern Day Floral, we heard about it again from Michael Lyman at the J.W. Marriott. If you know Michael, you know that his recommendations are usually spot on.

After leaving the J.W. we scurried over to the Ottawa St. location and met who is now one of my favorite people in the world. When we walked in and saw Jenn, before even meeting her, there was a huge smile on her face and a welcoming presence that hooked us. Before we knew it, we were signing contracts and committing to Modern Day Floral. She was the second florist we met with and the only one that really listened to my ideas and grasped what I wanted. Grand Jour, elegance and peonies. Lots of peonies.

Being a long distance bride was a joy with Jenn as I could always reach her and she was a dream to work with. If I was difficult at all during the wedding process, it was definitely regarding my flowers. I wanted perfection. I wanted something spectacular without spending a fortune and that is exactly what was delivered. In the beginning stages of the process I sent her emails daily of tons of pictures and ideas and she would tell me what it would take and if it would work. She was in constant contact with my mom and I and we never questioned her ideas as we trusted her with my vision and allowed her the freedom to execute it. The professionalism was endless. From the gorgeous mock ups to the ability to get exactly what I wanted when I wanted it. As mentioned in an earlier post, peony have a short seasonal availability but that wasn’t a concern of mine as Jenn was able to make it happen. Modern Day Floral also provided us with our incredible linens that we hadn’t even gotten around to thinking about. The linens added that special touch that really brought the room together and matched everything perfectly.

The Modern Day Floral team made my wedding what it was. I would not have trusted it with anyone else and they really are the best Grand Rapids has to offer. My wedding was long before they became the hottest ticket in town but I still would never hesitate recommending them to anyone.

Jenn is not only an incredible artist and talented business owner, she is one of the most genuine and sweetest people I know and I am blessed to be able to call her a friend. I mean really what more could you ask for? I got great flowers and a buddy for life. I call that a win!

Lauren is engaged!!!

Lauren, our fabulous PR gal over here at Modern Day Floral, got engaged last week to her boyfriend, Brent, of two and a half years! Last week she was on a mini vacation to her hometown in Houghton, MI when he popped the question.

Here is the story... it was their turn to make dinner, but Brent and his brother bailed to "go four wheeling". As Lauren was wrapping up dinner, they roared in after their little trip :) After innocent glares during dinner, Brent convinced lovely Lauren to go for a walk. He spotted some tiki torches down the beach and insisted they go find out what was going on. After trying to convince him to "let it go", they made their way to "crash the party." Upon their arrival... Lauren was trying to figure out what was in the sand. After reading the message in rocks about a dozen times, she started to tear up from being so happy! Brents comment as he held out the ring was, "Will you, will you, will you?!" After she could finally catch her breath to say yes, he asked her if she could handle being a Hanson :) Let the adventures begin!!!

Congratulations Lauren!!! We're so excited and happy for the two of you... and I'm sure the girls have already started brainstorm how we're going to make your wedding as fabulous as you are!!

Notes from Alishan: Things I would've done differently...

Hello Again!

So we all know I think my wedding was the best thing since the YSL Tributes I am currently lusting after. It was prefect for us and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. With that said, there are a few things I would have done differently.

The guest list: I adored having everyone I loved at our wedding but it was hard to get to spend quality time with everyone. We invited 255 and had 177 attend. If we had kept the numbers smaller we could have had more one on one time with our guests.
The dress: Now don’t get me wrong. I LOVED my dress. It fit my style perfectly and I gasped when I tried it on. It was made me for. However, since it was/is a more popular dress I probably could have bought a used one for a third of the price. I should have tried www.preownedweddingdresses.com before buying mine as I have already seen it on there several times.

The shoes: Again, loved mine. I still think they are absolutely lovely but I kind of wish I had gone sassier. Maybe a pink pair of Manolos or a great blue heel with a classic red bottom. I could have used the money I saved on my dress to sass up the footwear.
The food: I hear it was incredible. I wish I would have sat down and taken the time to eat it! Our rock star wedding planner had our meals delivered to our suite but when we got back, eating wasn’t a top priority.

I figure if there are only 4 things I would change about my big day, I’m in pretty good shape! Researching everything left me very pleased without (many) regrets.

Exotic Waterfall Event

Imagine standing in front of Tiffany's, someone hands you a large sum of cash and tells you to enjoy...how geeked would you be?! I know pretty ding-dang excited!! :) Well as floral designers working with a client who gives you creative freedom and a budget definitely creates that same sense of excitement. (Shhh...don't tell my husband I still love a little bling)

The Crush is the hottest nightclub in Grand Rapids and thanks to Tony, the GM, he is always coming up with outrageous events for the club. This particular party was their annual rainforest event complete with parrots, snakes, waterfalls and hot tubs! Now seriously do these people know how to throw a party.

This ginormous design actually had a waterfall that ran behind it and perched perfectly next to the arrangement were two gorgeous Macaw's.

Talk about swanky soft seating...loin cloth anyone?

I especially loved this container!

The entire club was dripping in spanish moss, ferns and fresh tropicals.

Notes from Alishan: Planning A Long Distance Wedding - Research

Hey there!

One of my dear friends is getting married next summer and while talking about her upcoming nuptials I thought of something that should be shared with you all. Jill touched on it briefly in her blog about her (and my) favorite flower the Peony, but I wanted to delve a bit deeper here.

It is absolutely imperative to the wedding planning process that you research everything you’re not sure of. When Mike proposed, I dove into wedding planning without really any idea what I was doing. I initially wanted to get married in June so I looked at the calendar and picked June 7^th. Simple enough. Until I realized a) that was festival weekend in Grand Rapids and it has rained the past 14 or so years and b) It was 6/7/08 and would be a wildly popular wedding weekend. We quickly changed to June 14, 2008 and things worked out perfectly.

My own love of peonies was also a huge factor in my wedding planning. When my mom asked me to list the most important things to me for my wedding, in that list was incredible flowers. After our first meeting with Jenn, I discovered that peonies have a very short window and that June 14^th would be pushing it. I basically told her to get me that flower by any means necessary. If I hadn’t been set on mid June and peonies, I probably could have saved money but because it was important to me, I was willing to pay.

Also, since we had a long engagement, I was able to research our vendors (have I mentioned that they were awesome) and not have to settle for just anyone. I read reviews from other brides on theknot.com, I asked for references, I even asked really obnoxious questions to make sure they were up for the challenge that would come with working with Team Alishan.

My next blog post is going to cover what I would keep the same and what I would change if I could do it over again. My failure to research is probably the only excuse I have for the things I would change and I don’t want you to have the same minor regrets.

Bottom Line: Research everything at least once. Whether it’s just double checking the schedules of those important guests or hopping on a wedding website to get vendor reviews, you will benefit in the end!

Your Petal Palette: Red

Romance, passion and love are just a few of the feelings I get from seeing the color red. Red is color often seen for a classic wedding however with a few greens and extra special details shades of red work great for exotic or Asian inspired event.

A solid red flower with white or black accents gives the arrangement a real modern vibe.

How precious is this bouquet?! The deep red roses with hints of stephanotis, embellished with crystals creates a timeless arrangement.

"We met New Years Eve 2007 at a party of mutual friends. Eric said it was love at first sight for him. I had arrived at the party before him so I was already a little too tipsy to feel that same way! We talked everyday after that and went on our first date the next week. We both knew on our first date that we would always be together. Everyone always says that when you meet "the one," you just know. We both really didn't believe in that until it happened to us."

What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"A perfect date for us is an elegant homemade dinner followed by an evening cruise on our boat."

What is the one thing about your wedding you are the most excited for?

"Our honeymoon! Two weeks in Greece!"

Tell us about your proposal story!

"We live in North Muskegon and love to go for drives by Lake Michigan. It was Halloween, 60 degrees and sunny - a gorgeous evening. We were on our way out of town and Eric wanted to drive by the lake first. I didn't think anything of it because we do that quite a bit. We walked down to the beach and we were the only people there. He got on one knee and asked the question. He managed to catch me off guard and I was totally surprised! The things he said to me were beautiful and we both were a little teary-eyed, laughing and crying at the same time. It was perfectly romantic."

I am privileged and excited to introduce myself as a member of the Modern Day Floral team. I knew I wanted to be a part of this venture when it was in its infancy. When I came across the enchanting window display Jennifer had put together, I realized something fresh had come to Grand Rapids. I was struck by her creative gift. Thus, my beginning at Modern Day Floral!

Along with floral design, one of the great joys of my life has been traveling. It has been a delight to experience flowers from all over the world. This includes the humble cactus flower to the most exotic blooms in the outback of Australia! By the way, if you ever have the opportunity to travel to Australia (maybe with an unplanned stop in Fiji!), be sure to check out EVERYTHING! It's great to experience the hospitality of the locals! I love being such a free spirit!!

Knowing I enjoyed being creative, I pursued educating myself in floral design. I attended Phil Rulloda's School of Floral Design in Anaheim, California to make sure I was learning from the best! Jenn encourages the staff to continue their education and always remain fresh. I am confident that my knowledge and love of flowers will better serve you at Modern Day Floral!

"Amber and I met at a college party through a mutual friend. I looked once at her and knew that was the person I needed in my life. We talked most of the night and I called about three days later to ask her out to dinner."

What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"Experiencing a restaurant that neither one of us have ever tried so a story is automatically created, great conversation and walking a downtown atmosphere... afterwards getting to know each other more. That was our first date..."

What is the one thing about your wedding you are most excited for?

"The ability to say I'm married to Amber and dance to a song that runs deep with us both - "God Blessed the Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts."

Tell us about your proposal story!

"Amber and I had been broken up for two years living cross country form one another when we realized it was each other that we had been missing. We were together again for around five months, flying back and forth from Arizona and Maryland, when I knew I had to marry her. She flew into Maryland in the beginning of October 2008 and it wasn't three hours later I asked her to mary me at my apartment. It wasn't the most romantic of locations but it was perfect! I then took her out to dinner at a restaurant on the water and New York City the following weekend to celebrate."

From Rendering to Reality...a drawing comes to life!

So I hate to admit I've never been a very patient person especially when it comes to surprises. What can I say I'm just a kid at heart! And although I only have a few images I couldn't resist sharing a sneak peak of the transformed space.

Thursday, the 2nd, the hard working Special Event Rental team draped white sateen fabric for nearly 8 hours while we worked hard at making sure all the chairs were straight and the crystal chandeliers hung in the just the right place.

I'm so excited to finally post about our first national publication! Ladies and gentleman, I present to you the summer 2009 issue of Bride and Bloom magazine. What a great "pinch me" moment today!

In Any Event, Jen Kroll Photograph y, Sweet Cakes Design and my wonderful team at Modern Day Floral had the pleasure of working together to create our vision of an a "modern event with a vintage flair". The inspiration behind this gorgeous tablescape came from the amazingly talented Jodi Bos and this season's hot hot hot color, lemon yellow. I loved how vintage came together with a modern twist.

The bridal bouquet contained cattleya orchids, craspedia, dusty miller finished with a custom couture handle with vintage crystal buttons. Karen, one of my designers, did an amazing job sewing the custom made couture handle wrap. Lord knows I couldn't sew a darn thing!

This entire experience was amazing and I'm honored to work with such talented group of people. Thank you!

BIRTH FLOWER OF THE MONTH: July..."The Waterlily"

Happy Birthday July Babies!

With the warm summer weather finally here, we're able to swim, boat and see the beautiful lake flower known as the water lily!

The water lily is found throughout the world and is also known as a lotus. If anyone shops at Pier 1, it is something you see all over their Asian decor! In many countries within Asia, the meaning of a Lotus or water lily bloom is rebirth or awakening to the spiritual/religious reality of life.

This flower also can resemble someone who has been able to overcome a difficult obstacle in their life. The story behind this "personal/floral" growth goes like this: Water lilies roots are deep within the soil below the water line and begin at the bottom of a muddy, murky lake. They rise through the water and once they have reached the surface, bloom into an absolutely beautiful flower... talk about feeling motivated and uplifted!

On that note, have a FABULOUS Monday and an incredible month of July to everyone... and again - HAPPY BIRTHDAY July babies :)

Picture This! An early glimpse into our wedding this Friday!

This Friday, we have the honor of designing a full service wedding for Melissa and Marty. This particular couple is actually holding both the ceremony and reception in the same room. We will have a quick room flip as soon as the ceremony is over which will be no small task. The entire Modern Day design team is excited to create this stylish wedding for this amazing couple!

I'm especially excited to share with you the rendering board that my unbelievable assistant Erin created. For those of you who do not know Erin, let me do the honors. Erin is a recent Interior Design graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design. I have been blessed enough to have worked alongside her for nearly a year. She is my dot the i, cross the t girl with a passion for the wedding and event industry. During our 10 minute interview :) Erin shared with me her impeccable portfolio and I knew I had to hire her. Since that time, she has been bringing my vision to fruition through these remarkable rendering boards. Depending on the scale of the perspective, rendering boards can take thirty to forty hours to create however it is so worth the investment! People are visual and having the ability to share a tiny glimpse of the event this way is so exciting.

This particular perspective is in fact the set-up for the ceremony portion of the wedding. The ceiling will be draped in a sheer ivory fabric and the couple will be married under a canopy dripping with crystal and orchid strands, black chivari chairs dressed in fresh floral and apple green lamour ties will provide elegant seating while the wheat grass containers and candle collections will create a modern, clean look down the aisle. We made a few changes after the fact but I will wait to share until the event recap. Trust me when I say it's gonna be good!

Tell us about the first time you two met!

"The first time we met was at a Starbucks on a blind date. We talked for a while and then went and watched an 80's cover band called the Yellow Brick Road. When the band was finished, we weren't ready to have the night end, so we decided to go out to Lake Las Vegas and walk around. Granted by this time it was about 3:00 am. We walked and talked some more. It seemed like we were trying to learn as much about one another as we could on that first night. We walked to a bridge that overlooked the lake and we were just hugging when Marty whispered in my ear, "I don't know how I found you, but I have to figure out a way not to loose you." Since that moment my life has never been the same."

What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"Honestly, spending time together makes anything we do 'perfect'."

What is the one thing about your wedding you are most excited for?

"We are most excited about the gathering of family and friends and to be able to share our special day with those we love."

Tell us about your proposal story!

"Marty and I had gone shopping for my ring a few days before Christmas. The jeweler let us take the ring with us that day, so I knew he had it, I just didn't know when he was going to ask. Christmas day rolled around and we were with my family. Everyone had opened all their gifts and Marty presented me with a large box. I opened it and inside was a smaller box. There was a box inside a box inside a box inside a box. In all, I think I opened about eight boxes! I finally got to the box that I recognized as "the ring" box. I was so nervous I could hardly open it. Once I got past all the tape, I opened the box only to find a Kasey Kahne tree ornament inside. I was half laughing and half crying. Marty and I have an inside joke about my non-love of NASCAR. It was a cruel but funny joke. As I was trying to gather myself and my other family members were distracting me, he had my niece go to the Christmas tree and get an ornament off the tree to hand to me. My niece handed me an Angel ornament that said Christmas 2008 and around her neck was the ring. It had been in front of me the entire day and I didn't even notice it. He said some beautiful words to me and then placed the ring on my finger. It was truly a Christmas I will never forget."

Your Petal Palette: Green

My absolutely FAVORITE color is green... to me it signifies life. The color green in fact means life, growth and renewal which signifies so much right now as we face our daily challenges. Negativity surrounds us daily in the media so it's refreshing to be surrounded by amazing inspiration through beautiful flowers.

As a designer I find inspiration in not only the flower itself but through their amazing colors. The color palette green offers endless flower and foliage options from orchids to hydrangea and everything in between. Believe it or not this fresh color is rather diverse coming in several varying shades; yellow green, sage/gray green, true green and even variegated green.

I absolutely loved this fresh table centerpiece! Our bride saved old wine and olive oil bottles to be used as unique vessels to hold single stems. We then added 4x4 cubes containing locally grown wheat grass which finished this organic centerpiece beautifully. This arrangement is a perfect example of yellow, variegated and true green.

This sweet cake topper is made from what I call our work horse flower, the Peruvian hydrangea. Some Hydrangeas can be temperamental when used in foam but not this chartreuse lovely. Who doesn't love a flower that lasts for weeks and is available year round?

I don't know about you but I'm in love with orchids especially Lady Slippers! They are so incredibly unique and the color is spectacular. Although this particular orchid variety is rather expensive it adds that perfect punch to what would otherwise be a very simple bouquet.

Making any Reception Site Beautiful!

So often I meet with brides requesting the same thing, how do I take a ordinary space and make it extraordinary all on a limited budget? Let me first start by saying that identifying your personal style is essential in creating a memorable event. Our first educational series covered that very topic. I would encourage you to first sit down and make a list of what's important to both you and your fiance.

In this post I thought it would be fun to share a wedding that took place at the infamous Cannonsburg ski lodge. In the winter you can find many hot chocolate milk faces and snow gear but who knew in the summer the lodge could be transformed into a reception location.

The brides request to create a Japanese garden reception was no small task in this rustic lodge. Our job was to transform this chalet style space equipped with wagon wheel light fixtures, dark wood and fieldstone fireplace into the couples perfect vision!

While on my site visit with the bride and her family we agreed there were areas that needed special attention. One of which was the wagon wheel light fixtures. Rather than work against the decor I chose to use the fixtures to our advantage. We first started by draping sheer chocolate and ivory fabric along with white chinese lanterns adorned in crystals. Next a unique floor plan was created by incorporating the use of 8ft. banquet style tables, hollow squares and square tables.

Rather than using the conventional front facing head table we actually placed two hollow squares in the center of the room. If you're asking yourself what in the world is a hollow square, I'll tell you. It's a combination of four 6 ft. or 8 ft. banquet tables designed in a square. This option worked perfectly for the couples head table not to mention the hollowed out center is a perfect place for a gianormous focal design.

Don't you just love the silk chinese lanterns with crystals. LED votives were used and last over 15 hours with fresh batteries. They are light weight and less dangerous than real candlelight. When on a limited budget I encourage people to spend the money on a few large focal designs vs. spreading a minimal budget over 20 to 30 tables.

Candles or floating blooms always make a great inexpensive compliment to any table.

Pink champagne runners were used on the guest tables while both head tables were dressed in full linens. I say if you can't afford to fully dress every table why not find a creative way to have a little of both. I promise it makes a huge difference!

My hope is that through this post and our educational series you gain a greater sense of how to create an event that is not only beautiful and affordable but uniquely your own.

"We met sophomore year at Western Michigan University where we had several mutual friends and classes together. It wasn't until our senior year of college, when we attended a work benefit together, that we realized there was something more than just a friendship growing. What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"It doesn't take us much to have a perfect date. We have the best time when we play a round of golf, spending time on the boat and meeting some friends for a BBQ and a bonfire."

What is the one thing about your wedding you are most excited for?

"We are so excited to be married in a beautiful church with our friends and family whom we love. The entire day will be amazing from the church and newly renovated Thousand Oaks Golf Course which will both decorated by Modern Day Floral to the tasty cake from Sweet Cake Designs. We just can't wait to see it all come together and to have Lisa Kae Photography capture the memories!"

Tell us about your proposal story!

"Bert took me on a stormy night to spend the evening on the beach in Grand Haven to have some ice cream and to watch the huge waves by the pier. After fighting a monsoon of rain on the drive out there, the sky finally cleared. He brought an umbrella in case there was more rain and we sat down on a blanket on the beach. Just as the sun was beginning to set, Bert surprised me with a beautiful ring and asked me to marry him!"

Planning a long distance wedding: The do’s and don’ts

So our very own Mrs. is back after an exciting couple of weeks, not only did they move into their first home but celebrated their one year anniversary...how exciting!!! However this post was worth the wait and you're in for a real treat. When I received the post this morning I could feel the blood, sweat and tears that went into planning this wedding from long distance. I'm sure you will find this blog to be insightful and incredibly helpful. Thank you Alishan for taking time out to share your experience with our readers!

Greetings! First, I must apologize for my absence last week. Mike and I were too wrapped up in the “Oh my gosh we’ve been married for a year already!” bliss and time just got the best of us.

When we became engaged we lived in Atlanta, Georgia but always knew we would get married in Grand Rapids. Both of our families live there and regardless of the jet setting, its home. Planning a wedding from a thousand miles away is a unique experience. Being away from the action and trusting others at all times to make your vision a reality can be overwhelming and intense to say the least.

With the help of my fabulous mom, I came up with this list of do’s and don’ts that we learned during the 20 month process.

Don’t

Assume anything. If you have a question or aren’t 100% sure about something, ask the question.
Trust the color of things on line or in photos try to see them in person. While trying to match the perfect shade of pink on the invitation to the linens, escort cards, etc. it was hard to go with what we saw online. A lot of times computers can distort colors and leave you thinking you’re looking at one shade of pink while it’s completely different. Ask your vendors to send you a small swatch or sample of the things you are interested in so you can be certain of what you are getting.
Use vendors you do not feel you can trust. These individuals can make or break your day. You don’t want to have to babysit or constantly worry about when your vendors will show up, if they’re doing their job and what the final outcome will be. After the contracts were signed and the details set, I didn’t have to worry about my vendors at all. This allowed us to enjoy the day with friends and family without a care in the world.
Set unrealistic expectations of those helping you. As excited as everyone is about your wedding, no one is nearly as excited as you are. You can’t expect everyone in your life to have your wedding be their number one priority just because it is yours. If people are willing to help you plan, allow them to help you when they have time. Not when it’s most convenient for you which is probably 24 hours a day!
Be a vendor stalker. These folks are busy and have other brides as well as you. It goes back to trusting your vendors. I promise your wedding in not their first and they will be prepared for your day. There is no need to check and double check and triple check if you trust them to do their job.

Get everything in writing. This is for your protection and your vendors. A simple precaution that can save everyone a lot of time and stress later on.
Follow up. After a meeting, shoot a quick email to make sure you and your vendors are on the same page. Once you are sure they are, go back on your merry planning way! This follow up will make the week before your wedding enjoyable and stress free you and all of those around you.
Take a weekend to get to the wedding destination to see what you have been planning. We went to MI probably 3 or 4 times over the 20 months to meet with our vendors, see the church and the time was invaluable. It eased my nerves and really made things feel real.
Trust your vendors. Have I mentioned this already? J I mean it!
Be clear about what you want. Once I started planning, I knew I wanted simple, luxurious, elegance. The details may have changed, but as long as I stayed focused on those three concepts, I knew I would be happy in the end.
Have a team to help you though all the details. If at all possible have a point person at the wedding location/destination they can follow-up in person and relay information back to you on the spot or later. This person was my mom. I woudn’t have been able to plan this wedding without her. She lives in GR and did a lot of the running around I wasn’t able to. From picking up napkins from Jenn and taking them to the JW to have them folded to the many, MANY visits to the printer for one thing or another, my mom was able to handle it. If you don’t have that person, be sure to stay organized so when you do visit your location, you can handle everything while there. Make a list and stick to it!
Send out invitations, notices etc in advance so people from out of town know what they are invited to and can make arrangements. About 60% of our guests were coming from out of town. From the wedding website, to the invitations to all of the different wedding weekend events, we were constantly providing information to our guests. Your Aunt Mary may not need to know 5 times what time the ceremony starts, but your future husband’s college roommate may need the extra reminder. J
Have fun! This is going to be overwhelming if you let it be. So don’t and you will thank me later!

Vintage Garden Wedding

Let me start by saying that Kari a/k/a bride is absolutely AMAZING! Not only is she gorgeous but she is one of the kindest most genuine people you will ever meet. I loved working with her because she understood the value of tiny details which made the creative process so much FUN!

During our consultation Kari shared her vision for a beautiful vintage garden wedding complete with lush peony, specialty linens and antique napkins, personal touches and a perfectly dressed table. She even provided some of the great decor accents that were used with the centerpieces. Pieces from our sterling silver collection were used to pull the entire look together.

Rather than start with the table details I just had to share the amazing couple first!

The dress was a beautiful Nicole Miller gown that looked as if it was designed specifically for Kari-simply stunning!

Seriously didn't I tell you she was gorgeous and look at those eyes! Julie Strating our local make-up celebrity did a gorgeous job accentuating Kari's already flawless features.

Everyone loves a man who isn't afraid to show his softer side. David wore a khaki suit with a crisp white shirt and a stylish green pin striped tie. Not only did he look dapper he was our comedic relief that day.

Sweet vintage handkerchiefs were used to wrap the stems for her bridesmaid bouquets. Just another fabulous find by the bride.

Kari spent hours surfing the web and antique stores for the perfect vintage brooch, it matched beautifully with her necklace.

Couldn't resist sharing just a few more bouquet shots showcasing the brooch and white ostrich feathers. I hope feathers stay in style for a long time because I'm absolutely in love with them. You?

I'm so in love with the color of the bridesmaid dresses! It was a cross between kiwi and kelly green, super cute!!!! I'll have to ask Kari and get back to all of you on the actual color. Seriously how fresh, flirty and fun!

Thanks to Jen of JK Photography we have this amazing collection of images to share with you. I love how beautifully she brought out the vintage feel of this wedding through her photography. I would also like extend a big "way to go" to Syd Design who helped create the lovely paper products. And to the Pinnacle Center for being so accommodating in allowing us to get in early just so we could ensure the linens were pressed and dressed to perfection.

Wedding Recap: Amanda and Adam

Amanda's bouquet was a romantic European hand-tied of hydrangea, lisianthus, vendella and spray roses with just a touch of green hypericum. My favorite touch was the lush ribbon loop collar.

Amanda was truly a gorgeous bride, so soft and feminine.

The centerpiece consisting of hydrangea, tulips and candlelight brought a simple yet romantic feel to the room. Although the design was minimalistic the overall effect made a bold impact and fit the decor of the venue beautifully. The best part, the vases were provided by Amanda and Adam making it easy to donate the flowers to a local hospital!

"I guess I would have to say I must have a pencil/pen and paper - there are so many ideas and thoughts that flow so fast from myself, vendors and the client... I want to make sure and catch everything."

Any great business advice that you swear by?

"I take a professional yet personal approach to business and this tends to work very well for me in this field. My "meetings" are more like conversations with a friend with a little business mixed in. Taking things as they come and full communication is imperative in this industry."

Are there any wedding styles or traditions that make you cringe?

"I can't stand the plain banquet tables that are skirted and left alone. Also the fan napkin fold seriously has to go."

What is the most important personal satisfaction you get with your job?

"I love to service people and take great pride in my work. Seeing something start from notes on paper and turn into something simply beautiful and seamless is worth every moment of effort."

If you could work with any one, who would it be?

"I would like to do one event with Rachel Ray as the chef... I think that would be such a blast!"

If you could have anyone as your client, who would it be?

"I would like to plan my own wedding someday so I'd have to say myself !!"

What does your normal day consist of?

"My normal day consists of working out, getting to work and returning the many emails and voicemails in my inboxes, attending the many meetings of the day, making sure the rooms are set up for morning and evening events, overseeing those events and planning future events in-between."

Days off and down time are cherished in this industry. How do you spend yours?

"I usually do the mundane things of cleaning the house, washing cars and dogs along with working out. If I get a couple of days off in a row, I will definitely spend an evening with family and friends (movie, dinner, shopping, ect).

Event Recap: Glamourous Graduation

Last week Thursday we were fortunate to design another amazing event with the talented Jodi Bos of In Any Event. The occasion was a high school graduation and 18th birthday celebration. In typical fashion, Jod gave us an unbelievable color palette of raspberry, tangerine and turquoise to work with and total creative freedom...gotta love creative freedom!

Nothing says, "welcome, we're so glad you're here" then happy little pom balls in a row! Over 100 daisy pomp blooms were used to create these cuties and tiffany blue double swiss satin ribbon added the finishing touch.

How about that view of the pool? Yes, it was as gorgeous as it looked in the pictures: 75 degrees, sunny and absolutely perfect!

Attention to detail and creating the unexpected has definitely become Jodi's trademark and this candy bar is living proof. How much do you love this yummy table and the whimsical cake created by Sweet Cakes Design is just the icing on the cake. Our tiny contribution was the collection of 6x6 cubes containing locally grown wheat grass finished with raspberry double swiss satin ribbon. This display was definitely my favorite detail from this event. You agree?

Selecting just the right container can make all the difference when creating a centerpiece. Thanks to Accent Decor I was able to find the perfect containers, in the perfect shade at the perfect price-bonus! Accent Decor has come out with a great new line of unique pottery in fabulous colors. I loved them so much I ordered a case in some of my favorite colors; lemon yellow, rich aburgene and tiffany blue.

Magenta cattleya orchids, pin cushion protea, cherry brandy roses, red ti leaf wraps, craspedia, dancing lily grass and copper wire made this refreshingly fun color palette come to life.

"We met through our work but the time that we really first took notice of each other was at a Christmas Party three years ago. I was not sure if I really wanted to go or not and ended up going anyways. Angela was there and we started talking and ended up having a lot of fun. At work we are both very professional and confident and thought that the other had an attitude problem but it turned out once we got to know each other that we were the perfect match. The rest is history..."

What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"During the day we like to do anything adventurous. We love being active together. Some of our favorite things to do are downhill skiing, waterskiing, kayaking, mountain biking, and tennis just to name a few. At night we like to go to dinner at nice restaurants and enjoy fine wine."

What is the one thing about your wedding you are most excited for?

"We are most excited to have all our friends and family together to celebrate. There are not too many chances that you can have all of your favorite people in one place and we are going to take advantage of it. The reception is going to be awesome but the people that are there are really what make it special."

Tell us about your proposal story!

"Greg won a weekend getaway through a work contest. We decided to make it a long weekend and stop in Chicago on our way to the destination. We had a fabulous day in Chicago at the Field Museum and then spent the rest of the afternoon shopping. We bought two Vera Wang wine glasses among other purchases. That evening, as we were getting ready to go out on the town, Greg poured some wine in the new glasses and said a special toast which ended in "Will you Marry Me?"

Hey y’all! Happy Wednesday. Hope this finds all of you lovely readers of Jens blog doing wonderfully. Over my past two posts I have received a couple of questions that I wanted to address before delving too much further into team Alishan. It’s a seriously extensive list and I’d hate for these ladies to have to wait.

First from Erin: What was the best part of my engagement process?

Erin, that’s a fantastic question as I have never really thought about it before. I would probably have to say the growth Mike and I experienced in our relationship as well as the relationships that were created with some of our vendors. It was also great to plan with my mom. She’s a serious rock star and the planning process brought us even closer.

Planning a wedding is a once in a lifetime experience and I wouldn’t change a single thing about mine. I was able to secure the vendors I wanted early on then sit back and relax for the better part of a year until the smaller details needed to be finalized. I was able to go to Miami for my bachelorette party with incredible friends. We made several trips up to Grand Rapids that were (for the most part) stress free and more about celebrating our love for one another and this joyous time instead of freaking out and running around trying to get things done. We could incorporate a lot of personal details because we had the time. It’s not for everyone, and at times it was frustrating because I just wanted to be married already, but again, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Next from Cairn: Any tips on getting married in the Cathedral? Suggestions or ideas to make it our own? It's so beautiful I don't want to do much to it, but some personalization would be nice.

Cairn, also a great question. I first attended St. Andrews Cathedral when I moved to Michigan in 6^th grade. It always stuck in my mind as gorgeous, but when we moved to Forest Hills, my family started attending St. Roberts. When time came to pick a church, I decided that I didn’t want to get married at St. Roberts for aesthetic purposes, but instead wanted to use St. Andrews. As you know it is beautiful beyond words. Every time I have been inside of the Cathedral, my breath was taken away. My mom and I didn’t think much decoration was needed at all and pretty much left it in the hands of our AMAZING florist Jenn. She and my mom met at the Cathedral when I was in Atlanta and they decided all the church really needed was something for the unity candle, an arrangement when you first walk in and an arrangement by the altar. It was important for us that whatever we added didn’t take away from the original beauty of the Cathedral and I feel we accomplished that. My advice would be to keep it simple and elegant. Those are two words you can never go wrong with!

These were great questions and hopefully helped others out there. Whether deciding on having a long engagement or how in the world you are going to plan from across the country, I am here to help. J

Tell us about the first time you two met!

"The very first time we met was at Grand Valley State University for club volleyball tryouts. I arrived early to the tryouts (for once in my life I was early) and Dave walked in shortly after I arrived. Dave said to me "I am glad you're here" and that is where our friendship started, 8 year ago now. We developed a great friendship over the years and began to fall in love without really knowing it. When the time was right, Dave let me know how he felt (what a happy surprise for me and a relief) and we haven't left one another's side since then."

What is your idea of the "perfect" date?

"My idea of a perfect date is spending the day in Chicago having lunch, dinner, of course shopping and walking hand-in-hand with Dave. One of our first weekends together was in Chicago and it is special to us."

What is the one thing about your wedding you are the most excited for?

"I am most excited to be able to call Dave my husband finally and for our daughter Peyton to be able to spend that special day with us. And of course I am so excited to see my bouquet and tables set-up at the reception - it's a vision I can't wait to see come to life!"

Tell us about your proposal story!

"Dave and I knew we were going to get married it was just a matter of when it would happen. We had been discussing getting married and I knew that Dave was looking for rings. I am a very aware person and not easily surprised - this made it a difficult process for him. Dave told me that it was going to be longer before he would be able to buy me a ring so he asked if I wanted to go to dinner. Of course I said yes - anytime I can eat salmon I am there! We ate at Dockers in Muskegon which is right on the water. We sat along the patio where it was very private. Amidst conversation, Dave asked if I was disappointed that he could not get a ring yet and I replied "no, I know that we will get married eventually." With that, Dave replied, "you know I love you right and I want to spend the rest of my life with you - so how about now?"As he said this he opened up his hand and had my ring in it! It was very sweet and I was surprised. It was the perfect proposal for me, I didn't want a big affair or a lot of people around - it was perfect with just him and me. I have to admit at first I was taken aback and asked Dave if it was a ring from a cracker jack box - I was totally thrown off course."

Wedding Recap: Kelly and Dave

On May 22nd, we had the pleasure of designing for Kelly and Dave! Their ceremony was held at La Grave CRC right downtown. I don't know about you but I love colorful stain glass windows and this sanctuary is loaded with them.

The fabulous bride and groom!!! They were absolutely WONDERFUL to work with and had an incredible sense of style...

This little lady is just a year old... seriously they don't get any cuter! Can you say, "I see a fabulous wedding for her in 20+ years!!!" I love how she's rockin' that mini bouquet!!

The reception was held at the B.O.B.'s Eve Lounge... a swanky and super-mod venue. We LOVE it! To keep with the fresh, clean-lined, and modern interior we used simple flowers, dynamic wheat grass, and attention grabbing grasses along with barked willow. The white glass pilsner vases were the PERFECT fit with the interior!

The unique head table configuration at the Eve is one of our favorite attributes...The spin on the tradition layout is refreshing and gives couples a modern and unique set-up. The rich teal leather banquette seating is uber cool not to mention super comfy, double bonus!
